The residents of Jayanagar 4th T Block stepped out late on Sunday evening only to find a glorious giant tree missing. BBMP had cut down the healthy tree, which was more than 50 years old, without even intimating the residents of their plan.
Enraged with this the residents are accusing the BBMP of axing healthy trees on 36th Cross near SSMRV College, without giving any valid reasons. Two weeks ago another civic body chopped down a tree near the footpath saying the tree’s root had decayed.
Pointing to the tree stumps, J Manjunath, a resident of the area, said:
“Can you see this space? Earlier, there were two healthy trees here. They felled one 15 days ago saying its root had decayed.
When I asked them if they had permission to chop the tree, they told me that they had not procured the permission. However, this tree was perfectly healthy. But they still went ahead and chopped it without speaking to the residents.”
Suresh Heblikar, environmentalist and a resident of the area, said
“This is absolutely shameful. The BBMP has chopped trees without any reason. We want development but that be done in a planned manner. Trees are not just trees. They are the eco-system, if they damage the eco-system then we may have to face greater problems in coming days. The BBMP must understand the significance of green cover in the city.”
